MRC Harwell hosts medically qualified fellows during both Academic Clinical Fellowships (ACF) and Research Training Fellowships, the latter to undertake a PhD. We have supported candidates, together with their host clinical departments, in the successful application for funding from the MRC and Wellcome Trust.
MRC Harwell has many active clinical collaborations in a number of disease areas and places a high value on having clinically qualified training fellows as part of our research effort. We aim to foster their research careers and give them experience of science in mouse genetics, functional genomics and genomic medicine.
A number of our clinical fellows have come to us via academic clinical departments as part of collaborations and have joint supervision whilst remaining as employees of the clinical departments. The fellow is a visiting worker at MRC Harwell and able to access all of our facilities. Past fellows have come, for example, from Imperial College (Department of Academic Medicine, St Mary’s Hospital Campus) and the University of Oxford (Nuffield Department of Surgery).
With strong translational research opportunities in a number of our research programmes, Harwell provides an excellent campus to carry out fundamental research into genetic mechanisms of disease and to translate those findings into therapeutic advances and healthcare improvements. Research at Harwell focuses increasingly on identifying and utilising mouse models for lifetime studies of the genetics of disease processes, from development to ageing. In this context, our research programmes span the genetics underlying neuroscience, metabolism and development.
